Tea Set

For this Tea Set, we were asked to create a set that included a teapot and two tea cups inspired by a literary reference. I decided to focus on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory as my inspiration. But also gained inspiration from artist Ray Bub, who creates these intricate functional designs.

For this tea set as I mentioned I was inspired by the famous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My thinking for this project was to create a set that represented all the different and wonderful candy that was not only mentioned in the book but the movie too. Such as the iconic chocolate bar and the gobstopper.

Ray Bub is an American Postwar & Contemporary ceramic artist. He began his ceramic carer in 1967 as a student at Swarthmore College. After graduating in 1970, he began his apprenticeship with former teachers and so on forth. Later soon establishing his own studio with artists Gordon Lavin and Tally Groves in Eastham, Massachusetts in 1973. As well in 1978 with his wife and business partner started Oak Bluffs Cottage Pottery at his home/studio in Pownal, Vermont.

Bub is known for his reassembled ring teapots. How does he create these? Well here's his process explained. First, a ring is thrown on the wheel by joining two walls together, then once the ring reaches leather hard Bub begins to trim it. Once that is complete, he then cuts the ring into various angles and then attaches them together. Then he lugs a handle and attaches a thrown spout. Finally creating a lid which is the last step of construction. After the glaze firing, we are shown the final products that I was inspired by.
